Technical Information: Clock Movements: The clock works (part that keeps time) are commonly powered by Cable drive (weights suspended on cables and pulleys and wound by a crank), Chain drive (weights hanging on a chain and wound by pulling the loose end), or Spring drive (a coiled spring wound by a key). Cable drive is most common. Chain drive can be less convenient and spring drive is usually found in wall and mantel clocks. Photo Example Rod Chime: These are most common type of chime and are found in every variety of clock. In wall and mantel clocks the rods are usually 3 to 10 inches long and up to 24 inches long in grandfather clocks. They can play the chimes of Westminster, St.Michaels, Whittington, and special versions that play Beethoven's 9th (ode to joy) & Ava Maria on 12 different rods. The hour count strikes on 3 or 4 rods. Chime Photo Bell Strike: Striking only on the hour this type of hour count today is quite rare and usually found only in reproduction type clocks. Bell Photo Tubular Bell Chime:Or pipe chimes are long brass tubes sometimes nickle or chrome plated and are usually 3 to 6 feet long (depending on the note) and around a inch in diameter. They come in 5 tube (Westminster chime only) or 9 tube models that also play Whittington , St.Michaels, and in Herschede clocks Canterbury chimes. The hour count strikes on one or more tubes. This type of chime usually are found in upper end models. Bell Photo Hear Chimes Nested Bells: A cluster of two or more bells depending on the number of musical notes needed to play a melody or chime. These are rare and usually found only in upper end clocks.   Bell Photo Quartz Movements: Battery operated movements, usually accurate to 4 seconds a year. The movements come in a large variety of clocks of every price range. Chiming is managed through a speaker and depending on the maker the music or chimes can be very desirable. Radio Controlled Clocks:These clocks have a built in radio receiver that receive the radio transition of WWVB in Colorado (The Nations Atomic Clock). What you have is a clock that sets the Time and Date automatic every day including Daylight Savings time and Leap year, Seconds ect. Jean Roulet : Battery Replacement Issue: These Clocks are of the highest quality and are hard to come by. The company is still in business in Europe. There may soon be Retailers selling Jean Roulet in the United States. Until recent the batteries for these clocks have been difficult to come by. Now Thanks to the research of Mr.Carl Niehaus (Owner of a Jean Roulet with a quest to find a replacement battery) We have some battery replacements that are near exact. They are: Eveready #EN1A and Duracell Procell PC1A several venders on the web offer these batteries between $3.00 to $7.00.
